Mrdjan Bajic

Mrđan Bajić is one of the leading contemporary artists and sculptors from Southeast Europe. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1981 and completed his postgraduate studies in sculpture in 1983. Since 1997, he has been a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Belgrade, and since 2021 he has been a Corresponding Member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU).

Since the early 1980s, Bajić has developed a distinctive artistic language that combines sculpture, installation, drawing, and architectural forms. His work explores themes of collective memory, identity, political history, monument culture, and the transformations of post-Yugoslav societies. Characterized by irony and a critical approach to historical narratives, his artistic practice continually examines the relationship between private and public space, memory and ideology.

Bajić has presented numerous solo exhibitions in Belgrade, Paris, London, Stockholm, Krakow, Salerno, Zagreb, and other European cities. He has participated in major international exhibitions and biennials, including the São Paulo Biennial and the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, where he represented Serbia with the project Reset.

His works are included in numerous public and private collections across Europe. Through a multidisciplinary practice spanning more than four decades, Mrđan Bajić has established himself as one of the key figures of contemporary sculpture and conceptual art in the post-Yugoslav region, with a particular focus on memory, history, and the cultural legacy of the twentieth century.
